Sailing 2,500 Miles

in aid of

Maggie’s Cancer Charity

Hi, I’m Christian—a 46-year-old dad of two, a passionate but novice sailor, and a cancer patient. A few years ago, I stumbled upon some incredible sailing documentaries on YouTube—Chasing Bubbles, The Sailing Brothers, and the adventures of Eric Aanderaa. Their stories of resilience, freedom, and adventure sparked something in me, and I knew I had to get out on the water myself.

I threw myself into learning everything I could, earning my Competent Crew and Day Skipper certifications, and I was well on my way to taking my Coastal Skipper exam. My dream was clear—to one day buy my ideal boat and sail around the world.

But life had other plans.

In January 2024, I was diagnosed with head and neck cancer, which had already spread to my lymph nodes. Suddenly, everything stopped. I underwent surgery, followed by six weeks of daily radiotherapy and three rounds of chemotherapy. It was the toughest fight of my life. But through it all, I held onto one thought: I will sail again.

And now, I’m doing just that.

THE CHALLENGE

Who am I?

Why am I doing this?

This May, I’ll be setting sail on a 2,500-mile solo journey around the UK coast to raise funds and awareness for Maggie’s Cancer Charity—an organization that has been a lifeline for me and so many others facing cancer.

It won’t be easy. My body is still recovering, and I may need to stop for medical appointments along the way. But that’s part of the challenge—I’ll navigate this journey just like I’ve navigated my illness, adjusting as needed but never giving up. If I need treatment, I’ll dock in a marina, take a train back to Manchester for appointments, and then return to continue my voyage.
